Why this book was written....
Landing a College Job: A Practical Guide for English, ESL, and Foreign Language Job Seekers was written as a result of an encounter I had with an adjunct instructor in the ESL Department at a community college where I currently work. He was teaching a course which followed my class and entered the classroom a few moments before I left. As I was gathering up the rest of my books, we exchanged a few words about his writing class. He then paused and stated, “I guess you could tell that was my first interview.”
I was indeed on the hiring committee when he interviewed for a tenure-track position in the department and I will probably always remember that interview. His statement, however, stayed with me all week and I began to think about what went wrong. Were the interview questions unclear? Did we intimidate the candidates? Was the teaching demonstration prompt too vague? After a great deal of thought, I realized that it was in fact simple – many job seekers simply don’t know what to expect in a college interview and they don’t know what they need to do to prepare. The whole process is so vague and the flex day workshops and informal discussions we offer our adjunct faculty simply don’t give them the information that they need. This book is, therefore, a response to a need expressed by this individual and many others seeking teaching positions in community colleges.
Landing a College Job: A Practical Guide for English, ESL, and Foreign Language Job Seekers is essentially self-help guide for anyone looking for a college teaching position in these fields. It describes the A-Z of the job search process beginning with finding job postings to landing a full-time position. It clearly and concisely presents job seekers with practical advice, suggestions, and useful tips on how to improve their chances of getting a teaching job in a community college. The book is written in a reader-friendly, accessible style as it is meant to address the nuts and bolts of the job search process.
I believe this book will motivate job seekers and increase their self-confidence because they will know what to expect before, during, and after a college job interview. Because I have served on numerous hiring committees, job seekers get the inside scoop on the process and what they need to do to get a job offer. In a highly-competitive market where there might be over a hundred applicants for one position, this book is a must have for English, ESL, and Foreign Language job seekers. I hope readers will find this helpful as they embark on the job search journey.
